Frequently Asked Questions

CBD F.A.Q.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol. It is a natural and non-psychoactive oil derived from the Hemp plant. CBD, along with over 100 additional naturally occurring cannabinoids, are primarily cultivated from the stalks and stems the hemp plant. Research suggests that CBD may provide mind and body wellness benefits. CBD is different than marijuana, which is cultivated from a different breed of the Cannabis plant. Legal CBD products have less than 0.3% THC and do not provide a high feeling like marijuana does.

What are the benefits of CBD?

Due to the infancy of the CBD category, clinical research is limited on the effects of CBD. What we do know is that CBD helps activate the body’s endocannabinoid receptors. The endocannabinoid receptors are responsible for homeostasis, regulating mood, pain, inflammation, sleep, memory and the immune system. We encourage you consult with your doctor about CBD and leverage public research on the topic such as that found at PubMed.gov.

How does CBD work?

Every living mammal has a physiological system called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This regulatory system naturally produces cannabinoid-like structures throughout the body that foster cellular balance throughout many of your body’s biological systems. The job of the ECS is to create homeostasis. It produces cannabinoids when the body senses imbalance to help regulate your body to live comfortably, controlling things like pain, sleep, mood, etc. It helps the body’s neurons navigate the neurotransmitters to the right receiver by elevating levels that are too low or decreasing levels of a hormone that is overabundant.

The ECS has two receptors for cannabinoids called CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors, which are present throughout the body. CB1 receptors are more prevalent in the brain and deal with coordination and movement, pain, sleep, emotions, mood, thinking, appetite, memory and other functions. CB2 receptors are more common in the immune system and affect inflammation and pain. CBD is a phytocannabinoid (plant-based cannabinoid) that attaches to ECS receptors and inhibits the enzymes that break down endocannabinoids, leading to an increase in the body’s naturally produced cannabinoids. CBD becomes an asset when the body cannot produce enough cannabinoids naturally.

What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are plant-based compounds that activate receptors in the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Over 100 cannabinoids can be found in the Hemp plant, with CBD being the most prevalent.

What is the difference between CBD, CBD Oil, Hemp Extract, Hemp Extract Oil, Hemp Oil?

Hemp Extract, or Hemp Extract Oil, is cultivated from the Hemp plant and contains over 100 cannabinoids, the most prevalent being CBD. Because of the high percentage and legality of CBD, these terms are often used interchangeably. CBD when in oil form is also sometimes called CBD oil.

Hemp oil is a different product and is not believed to contain therapeutic benefits. It is produced by pressing hemp seeds and does not contain cannabinoids. Hemp oil is like a cooking oil.

Is CBD the same as Marijuana?

No, CBD is not the same as marijuana.

The Cannabis Sativa plant can be bred and grown into two different species of plants – the hemp plant and the marijuana plant. A hemp plant gives us hemp extract, which contains high levels of CBD and an extremely low levels of THC. A marijuana plant gives us marijuana, which contains high levels of THC and lower levels of CBD.

The U.S. Farm Bill passed in December, 2018 has made it legal to manufacture and sell CBD cultivated from the Hemp plant containing 0.3% or less THC. Due to the low level of THC in these products, there is no psycho-active effect or “high” feeling.
